Continuity of service has advanced one step further at The First Bank of Whiting with the announcement that Michael E. Schrage has joined the staff of The First Bank as Assistant to the President.

Twenty-four year old Michael thus becomes the fourth generation Schrage to be an active participant in the financial institution founded by his great-grandfather Henry more than three-quarters of a century ago.

Michael, with a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado will be working closely with his father, Bank President Walter Schrage.

But, the younger Schrage has some ideas of his own. For one thing, he wants to develop the Bank's Commercial Loan Department to a state of increased activity in the commercial life of the community. Michael Schrage sees the family bank as an institution in transition. From a small firm, as banks go, he sees the First Bank of Whiting to be in the middle of a move to becoming a medium sized banking institution. He views the potential for growth to be in the bank's new branches at Highland and Dyer. Yet, one of his ambitions is to provide even more banking services for the customers of the main office in Whiting.

This is not his first experience in the bank, since he had worked during the summer recesses from college as a teller and in the mortgage loan department. Michael says that it was during his graduate days at Colorado where he took his masters degree following his under-graduate work at Dennison University at Granville, Ohio that he first became "turned on" by the financial world. He says ... "It was in grad school that I really learned that finance, and banking in particular, can be a real challenge, rather than a humdrum business. It is one area in which a young man can really contribute to a better world."

Both Michael and his father are proud of his record in athletic prowess. Michael was a wrestling champ at Culver Military Academy and was an Intercollegiate Champion wrestler in the state of Ohio during his under-graduate years.

Commenting on the addition of the fourth generation to the long history of The First Bank of Whiting, Indiana, Charles O'Drobinak (50 year associate and employee) said, "You can hardly find more stability than that shown by this unusual fourth-generation record of the Schrage Banking family of Whiting."
