Whiting Shocked to Hear of Death of a Well Known Citizen

WHITING, April 2.-The populace of Whiting and the Calumet region was shocked today upon learning of the sudden death of William C. Schrage, cashier of the Bank of Whiting and vice president and director of the State Bank of Whiting.

Mr. Schrage died at his home in Beverly Hills at 2051 W. 110th place, Chicago, at 2:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon from a sudden heart attack. He was 58 years old at the time of his passing.

Bank associates of Mr. Schrage in Whiting, the Calumet region and Chicago were also shocked to learn of the death of the well known Whiting banker.

Mr. Schrage had been subject to heart attacks for several years, but at no time was his condition considered as very serious, He was last at his desk in the Bank of Whiting Thursday and "was feeling fine,” his associates said. Yesterday he stayed at his home in Beverly Hills because of a sudden "illness feeling." He died in bed during the afternoon.

William C. Schrage had been connected with the Bank of Whiting, the city's oldest banking institution, since it was organized in 1895. by his father, Henry C. Schrage, Sr. Henry Sr., at present is chairman of the board in the bank.

When the Bank of Whiting was incorporated in 1917, William Schrage was appointed cashier and held that position in his father's bank until his sudden death. When the First National Bank, of Whiting, and the First Trust and Savings Bank, of Whiting, merged in December, 1931, and a new bank -The State Bank of Whiting, was organized, William Schrage was made a vice president and a director of the new institution.
